Centre for European & International Studies Research

University of Portsmouth

CEISR is a major interdisciplinary centre for research on Europe and the wider world, with a vibrant, supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. It was ranked first in its field in the 2008 RAE.

Bringing together more than 60 researchers and 20 postgraduates from across the University, the Centre offers a vibrant, supportive and intellectually stimulating environment within which to pursue research. It was ranked first for research power in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, making us the largest interdisciplinary research centre for European studies in the UK. Our activities have been funded by major UK and European research councils, including the AHRC, ESF, ESRC, EU, UNESCO, the British Academy and various NGOs.

We welcome linguists, historians, sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists and specialists in area studies, as they undertake interdisciplinary research in disciplines across the humanities, social sciences and arts. Under the CEISR umbrella, researchers are grouped into research clusters. A regular programme of events helps to promote research interests within the Centre and nurtures a vibrant research culture. CEISR also hosts a number of strategic research projects, on topics such as EU language policy, Transnational European Union, the History of the Jewish Press in Central Europe, Port Towns and Francophone Africa in a comparative and transnational context.

We are affiliated with a number of external stakeholders and research organisations on issues of mutual interest, including SELP and Chatham House.

2013: The University has been awarded Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence status, held by only some 150 universities across the globe. We also have two Jean Monnet professors and a Jean Monnet European Studies module.
